Inspired by the true love story of Raja Sawant Singh and Bani Thani of 18th-century Kishangarh.

In the royal town of Kishangarh, Rajasthan, in the 18th century, there lived a woman whose beauty was remembered not only for her face, but for the feeling she carried in her eyes.

Her name was Bani Thani.

She was a singer and poet in the court of Maharaja Sawant Singh. The Maharaja was not only a ruler — he was a poet himself, writing under the name Nagari Das.

Their love was unusual for its time.

He saw in Bani Thani something beyond courtly beauty. She became his inspiration, and their story became intertwined with the devotional world of Radha and Krishna. Under the patronage of the Kishangarh court, artists began creating paintings of extraordinarily graceful women, with elongated eyes, delicate features and an almost dreamlike beauty.

The famous Kishangarh style was born around this world of love, poetry and devotion.

And there is something beautiful about what happened next.

Kings, palaces and possessions disappear with time. But a face painted by a loving hand can survive for centuries.

Bani Thani’s story is remembered today because her love became part of Rajasthan’s artistic heritage. Maharaja Sawant Singh eventually gave up his throne and went to Vrindavan with her — a remarkable gesture for a ruler of his age.

This painting carries that same feeling.
